Dooars
Dooars or Duars are plains in the foothills of the eastern Himalayas in north east India and the major portion of it lies in the state of West Bengal in India. Dooars politically constitutes the plains of Darjeeling district, whole of Jalpaiguri District, upper region of Cooch Behar district in West Bengal and the districts of Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Goalpara and Bongaigaon in the Indian state of Assam. Brahmaputra and Manas in Assam and Jaldhaka, Murti, Torsha, Sankosh, Dyna, Karatowa, Raidak, Kaljani are some of the rivers crossing the Dooars. Duar means door and form the gateway to Bhutan and all the north eastern states of India. Some of the major town situated in the Dooars is Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri, Birpara in West Bengal and Tezpur, Bongaigaon, Goalpara, Barpeta, Dhubri in Assam. With stretches of tea gardens, national parks, sanctuary and rivers cutting cross the area makes it the tourist hotspot of north Bengal. With background of the Himalayas this region is a paradise for nature lovers. Wildlife sanctuaries and national park like the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary; Buxa National Park; Gorumara National Park; Chapramari Wildlife Reserve; and the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary in West Bengal and Manas National Park in Assam are the major tourist attraction.
